The number of public pharmacies in Saxony has fallen significantly over the last ten years. For many citizens, it is becoming more difficult to obtain medication close to home.

The number of public pharmacies in Saxony continues to decline. At the end of last year, there were 876 - 115 fewer than ten years previously, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. In 2014, the number was still 991.

In total, around 2,255 pharmacists were working in pharmacies in Saxony as at December 31, 2024 - their average age was 44. Ten years earlier, it was 43 years. In addition to the public pharmacies, there were 19 hospital pharmacies in the state with 171 pharmacists.

In addition, 17 percent of 16- to 74-year-olds in the state used the option of ordering medicines or food supplements online last year in a reference period of three months.
