Members of The Left in the state legislature have warned of a collapse of the long-term care insurance system and are calling for a swift change in course. “The solution is a comprehensive long-term care insurance plan into which everyone—including members of the state parliament, the self-employed, freelancers, and civil servants—contributes fairly based on their total income,” explained parliamentary group leader Susanne Schaper in the state parliament. “People pay into an insurance plan to be protected. That is no longer the case with long-term care insurance: According to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, it will soon be insolvent,” Schaper clarified. The long-term care insurance system fears a deficit of ten billion euros by 2027. “If benefits aren’t paid, those in need of care suffer directly: In the worst-case scenario, the home care service will no longer visit Grandma Erna to make sure she takes her medication, has food, or can take a bath.
