Viewing platforms with a view of the old town, a skate park or a glowing underside? Designs for the new building across the Elbe show different ideas. The people of Dresden can have their say.

A good one and a half years after the collapse of Dresden's Carola Bridge, four planning offices have presented their designs for the new bridge. They presented their concepts to a monitoring committee appointed by the city council, as announced by the state capital.

Clear differences between the designs

The submitted visualizations show clear differences both in the design of the structure itself and in the design of the riverbank areas. Sometimes the bridge arches are more emphasized, sometimes less. One of the proposals remains simple, while others include design elements such as balconies on the bridge with a view of the old town or lighting on the substructure. One of the designs envisages a gallery in the bridgehead, benches and a skate park on the Neustadt side.

The planning offices had six months to draw up the designs. The city council had defined key data and framework conditions for the tender. For example, the new building should have four lanes for car traffic, be functional and at the same time blend harmoniously into the historic cityscape. A maximum of one pillar in the Elbe is planned. The technical requirements are: Robustness, durability and low maintenance requirements.

Multiple bodies involved in the decision-making process

The 26-member monitoring committee is now preparing a recommendation for the city council. In addition to Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) and Building Mayor Stephan Kühn (Greens), the committee also includes other representatives from politics, business and civil society. In addition, the specialist departments of the state capital and an external panel of experts will review the drafts.

Citizens can vote

City society is also invited to participate. On 13 June, a public exhibition with visualizations and models of the four designs will be launched at the Stadtforum. The "carolaVOTE" online vote will then also begin.

The final decision, however, lies with the city council, which will vote on the submissions on September 3. According to current plans, the bridge is to be rebuilt from May 2028 and completed in 2031.

The Carola Bridge - a prestressed concrete structure from the GDR era - partially collapsed on the night of September 11, 2024. No one was injured. The demolition took about a year.
