On the occasion of Basic Law Day, Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer emphasized the importance of the constitution even in today's world. "For me, Article 1 of the Basic Law is still the most beautiful and certainly the most important. Human dignity is inviolable. And we are all equal," said the CDU head of government in a video statement on Platform X.
The passage has its origins in the Holocaust and the Shoah, but is also relevant in the present day. "It has lost nothing, absolutely nothing of its significance," said Kretschmer.
The Basic Law is a great foundation for living together, has provided security and created prosperity, said Kretschmer.
The Basic Law as the constitution for the Federal Republic of Germany was proclaimed on May 23, 1949. This year, the day is being celebrated for the first time with a "day of honor". Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has initiated this and assumed the patronage. In doing so, he wants to anchor the Basic Law Day and the achievements of the constitution more firmly in people's consciousness.
