Kretschmer: No government with the Left Party

Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer considers it out of the question to form a government with The Left following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. “It’s absolutely clear: a coalition government with The Left is out of the question. The differences in policy are so great, so enormous. It’s simply not possible,” the CDU politician said on ZDF’s “Morgenmagazin.”

A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday. In the latest polls, the AfD holds a clear lead over the CDU. In general, the poll numbers—including those for the smaller parties—suggest that forming a government in the state could prove complicated. Kretschmer himself leads a minority government in Saxony. His coalition sometimes secures majorities in parliamentary votes with the help of the Left Party. In Thuringia, too, the governing coalition led by Minister President Mario Voigt (CDU) lacks a majority of its own in the state parliament.
