An incident in Leipzig, a suspension from duty, and now a vote: What’s next for Freiberg’s mayor, Philipp Preißler?

Following an incident at a hotel in Leipzig, the Freiberg City Council will vote on Thursday on whether to initiate a recall process against Mayor Philipp Preißler (Independent Voters). Preißler is alleged to have gone on a rampage there on August 6 and thrown parts of the interior out the window. When the police intervened, he is said to have injured two officers, according to a statement regarding the incident. An investigation is underway for property damage and resisting law enforcement officers.

The motion was filed by the Free Voters. They argue that Preißler severed contact with the city administration after being sworn in early July. In addition, the district administration has imposed a suspension from duty on him.

A three-quarters majority in the city council is required to initiate the proceedings. There will be no debate prior to the vote. If the council approves the motion, the citizens of Freiberg will decide whether Preißler should be removed from office. At least 50 percent of the votes would be required to confirm his removal.
