Alexander Dierks, President of the Saxon State Parliament, views the rising number of anti-Semitic crimes as a warning sign for society. Dierks made these remarks in light of the anniversary of the pogroms against synagogues and Jewish businesses on November 9, 1938. “Commemorating the beginning of the systematic extermination of Jews under National Socialism is more than just remembering history: Now more than ever, it is a call to each of us to take a stand against anti-Semitism and exclusion—and to advocate for a free and humane society.” “November 9, 1938, was a fateful day for the Jewish people in our country. Recent events, too, have repeatedly revealed overt anti-Semitism,” Dierks emphasized, citing in this context the attack on the synagogue in Halle in 2019 and the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, in Israel. “Jewish cultural and religious life naturally belongs at the heart of our society. We must protect Jewish life through the means provided by the rule of law: Anyone who attacks Jews is attacking our way of life, which we have cherished for 80 years in the Federal Republic of Germany and for 36 years here in Saxony,” said Dierks.
