Saxon BSW parliamentary group leader Sabine Zimmermann has announced her retirement from politics. She will relinquish the chairmanship of her parliamentary group and her seat in the state parliament at the end of the year, she said in Dresden. The decision was not an easy one.
Zimmermann explained her decision by citing a serious illness at the beginning of the year: "It showed me my limits. It has taken a lot of strength from me and that is why I am retiring from active politics."
Who will take over the leadership of the parliamentary group in the future remains open. Information on this will be provided later, said parliamentary group spokesperson Ines Schwarze.
Zimmermann wished her party all the best. "I am sure that the BSW will also give a voice here in Saxony to all those who are not considered by the ruling politicians, so to speak," she said.
Last weekend, the BSW elected Jörg Scheibe and Ronny Kupke as the new party executive at a state party conference in Bautzen after the previous chairperson Zimmermann did not stand as a candidate. Kupke is also deputy leader of the parliamentary group. The party is represented in the state parliament as the third largest parliamentary group with 15 MPs.
