Free Voter leader Thomas Weidinger is throwing in the towel in Saxony. He wants to initiate a generational change at the top. However, he is also disappointed by the lack of support.

Thomas Weidinger has resigned as leader of the Free Voters (FW) in Saxony. The leadership of the party is now in the hands of his two deputies Matthias Binner and Madelaine Vogt until a new chairman is elected, Weidinger told the German Press Agency in Dresden. After five years as chairman, two federal elections and a lost state election, the time had come for new heads with new ideas to take over responsibility.

Lack of support from the grassroots

In a letter to members, Weidinger expressed disappointment at the lack of support from the FW associations, district parliamentary groups and district associations. The attitude of some municipal players to date not only weakens the state association, but also damages the entire political capacity of the Free Voters in Saxony. "Cherry-picking - benefiting at a local level but keeping your distance in state politics - cannot and must not be a long-term model. We finally need clarity, reliability and a minimum level of solidarity within our own structures."

"No positive picture" at federal level

The FW is not showing a positive picture at federal level either, explained Weidinger. "The caving in by Hubert Aiwanger and his Bavarian parliamentary group in connection with the debt brake has noticeably damaged the reputation of the Free Voters - also in Saxony. Instead of swiftly adopting a clear civic-conservative course after the weak result of the last federal election and having the courage to openly address uncomfortable issues, they are sticking to non-binding platitudes." This neither creates trust nor achieves political relevance. "Anyone who is not prepared to endure the occasional headwind will neither gain profile nor win elections."

Weidinger only sees prospects of success with a clear conservative profile

All of this is just one aspect of the party's current difficult situation. "In my view, we only have a realistic perspective if we give ourselves a clear conservative profile and develop a political offer that goes beyond the purely municipal level." Weidinger announced a state party conference in Chemnitz on June 13.

The Free Voters, who are traditionally strong in the municipalities with voter associations, only received 2.2 percent of the second votes in the last state election in the Free State of Bavaria in 2024. As their candidate Matthias Berger won a direct mandate, they are still represented in parliament. The FW in Saxony claims to have 120 members.
