The Saxony State Command of the German Armed Forces has a new commander. The 48-year-old Colonel Marco Tkotz replaces Colonel Michael Popielas (63), who was retired during a ceremonial roll call at the Grove of Honor in Dresden's Graf Stauffenberg Barracks. Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) was also present at the ceremony, along with several members of his cabinet and soldiers from Poland, the Czech Republic and the USA. The handover of command was performed by Lieutenant General André Bodemann, Deputy Commander of the Operational Command of the Bundeswehr.
Kretschmer thanked Popielas and the State Command for the work of the Bundeswehr, including in civilian missions such as the fight against floods and forest fires. We have a lot to thank the state command for, he said. "During this time, we always knew that we could rely on the Bundeswehr."
The Erfurt Air Force Music Corps plays the "York March" and the "Steigerlied" during the ceremony. At the end, Popielas and his wife Evelyn drove off the formation of the enlisted soldiers in an ESK "Mungo" - an emergency vehicle for specialized forces.
