The Greens in the Saxon State Parliament are warning against dismantling the State Offices for Archaeology and Historic Preservation. In the state parliament, they accused the government of seeking to strip the two independent agencies of their authority and downgrade them to specialized departments within the State Directorate. This risks political interference in professional decisions, said State Representative Wolfram Günther: “The planned changes are not a step toward the future, but a devaluation of historic preservation and archaeology.”
By dismantling the State Office for Archaeology and removing the State Museum of Archaeology in Chemnitz from its academic context, the state government is jeopardizing one of Saxony’s most successful cultural and research institutions, criticized State Representative Claudia Maicher. The museum uniquely combines research, knowledge dissemination, and public outreach. Anyone who tears these structures apart weakens archaeology in the Free State.
