Greens and Left in Saxony: "We won't go along with everything"

Saxony's governing parties, the CDU and SPD, are dependent on cooperation with the opposition. The Left and the Greens are not satisfied with this - and are calling for change.

The parliamentary group leaders of the Left Party and the Greens in Saxony, Susanne Schaper and Franziska Schubert, have called for a rethink by the governing parties. "If the coalition continues as before, we as the Left must stop working together," said Schaper in an interview with the "Sächsische Zeitung". According to her, the CDU and SPD must become more willing to compromise and work together "at eye level".

In Saxony, the CDU and SPD are currently governing without their own majority. They have to work together with the opposition to pass resolutions. Laws and motions should therefore also be coordinated with the Greens and the Left at an early stage.

Schubert: Coalition is playing dead

However, this so-called consultation process is "anything but smooth", said Schubert. Submitted proposals, for example, sometimes lie in the process for months and her party is waiting for feedback, as the Green politician said. "But what are we seeing from the minority coalition? Organized irresponsibility, playing dead and sitting out," said Schubert, describing the situation.

However, the type of cooperation in Saxony - if it works - could serve as a model for the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania next year, said Schaper. "We could show that democratic politics also works in new forms. That's why it's a shame that the CDU and SPD are hardly making use of this opportunity," said the Left Party politician. She added that her party and the Greens were prepared to negotiate and compromise. "But we won't go along with everything."
