More than 14,000 people required to leave the country—many with temporary residence permits

There are currently 14,422 rejected asylum seekers living in Saxony who are required to leave the country. However, 11,462 of them have been granted temporary residence permits, including 2,758 due to a lack of travel documents, according to the Ministry of the Interior in its response to a parliamentary question from AfD domestic policy expert Sebastian Wippel in the state parliament. He believes the deportations are proceeding too slowly. “Only 454 people required to leave the country were deported in the first half of 2026. 540 deportation attempts failed.” Wippel regularly requests these figures. 

In its annual statistics for 2025, the Ministry of the Interior had also noted a rising number of voluntary departures by rejected asylum seekers. The figure stood at 1,588 the previous year, the highest on record. In 2024, 950 people voluntarily complied with the order to leave the country. In addition, 917 migrants were deported last year (2024: 936). It was reported that 64 percent of planned deportations were unsuccessful. In most cases, those affected went into hiding beforehand.

Interior Minister Calls for Better Enforcement of Departure Requirements

Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) has repeatedly called for better enforcement of departure requirements. He said in the spring that it must once again be possible to use regular detention facilities for pre-deportation detention. To ensure sufficient capacity for the repatriation of rejected asylum seekers, he said, airlines must be required to cooperate. Sometimes deportations fail due to decisions made by the airlines.
