The conservative Heimatunion within the CDU in Saxony is in favor of pragmatism in dealing with the AfD. "If we continue to base our decisions more on firewalls than on content, more and more people will jump over the firewalls. We have to learn from this," explained Sven Eppinger, Chairman of the Heimatunion. What matters is the content of politics, how it acts for the good of the German people and how damage is averted. "It doesn't matter which of the democratically elected MPs have supported this content."
Heimatunion sees Saxony's CDU in a pioneering role
"If the CDU at federal level takes a little longer to internalize and implement this, then at least we in Saxony should lead the way. It would not be the first time in German history that a wall has been torn down from Saxony," emphasized the head of the Heimatunion.
The background to the comments is a debate within the CDU/CSU on the right way to deal with the AfD. On Monday, Chancellor and party leader Merz once again spoke out in favor of a clear demarcation course towards the AfD, but at the same time distanced himself from the term "firewall".
