While digging, workers made an unusual discovery that has caused quite a stir—and is set to be on display soon.

Construction workers stumbled upon a Wehrmacht armored vehicle on the grounds of the Nordholz Air Base (Cuxhaven district). The assault gun, which is almost completely intact, is a “historically significant find,” said Mariel Kubatz of the Federal Agency for Real Estate. “Usually, one tends to find individual parts.” It is scheduled to be exhibited starting in August at the Tank Museum in Munster (Heidekreis) and later at the Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden.

The “StuG III” assault gun was a maneuverable, small vehicle used by the Wehrmacht to destroy enemy tanks during World War II. This model is considered the most widely produced fully tracked vehicle of the Wehrmacht. Assault guns did not have a rotating turret. To aim the forward-facing cannon, the entire vehicle had to turn.
