Landtag President Alexander Dierks has recalled the first historic session of the Saxon Landtag. "The free elections and the first session of the Saxon state parliament in 1990 were historic milestones on the way to a stable democracy in Saxony," said the CDU politician. Next Monday, the anniversary will be celebrated with a panel discussion among young people and a photo exhibition, among other things.
35 years ago, on October 27, 1990, the Saxon state parliament met for the first time following the Peaceful Revolution and the re-establishment of the Free State of Saxony. The 160 members of parliament gathered in the Dreikönigskirche church in Dresden. Today's plenary chamber did not yet exist at that time. It became the meeting place of the state parliament in 1993.
"Despite all justified criticism of political decisions, we should never jeopardize our liberal democracy with its free elections," warned Dierks.
