The cities of Bischofswerda, Grimma, Lauta, and Oberlungwitz are receiving urban development grants totaling millions. This year, the four municipalities will receive a total of nearly 19 million euros from the “Lebendige Zentren” (Vibrant Centers) program, according to the Saxon Ministry of Infrastructure. By 2040, that figure is expected to reach 36.2 million. The projects have been newly included in the program.
In Bischofswerda (Bautzen district), the funding is intended to help revitalize the old town. In Lauta (Bautzen district), plans include renovating two daycare centers and redesigning green spaces and pathways. The city of Grimma in the Leipzig district is receiving the funds for its Nerchau neighborhood, where, among other things, the cultural center is to be renovated. In Oberlungwitz (Zwickau district), the focus is on revitalizing a former industrial site with historic buildings.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, more than 6.6 billion euros have flowed from the federal and state governments to Saxony’s municipalities through various urban development funding programs since 1991. In addition to the “Lebendige Zentren” program, there are two other funding programs.
