Without having run for office, Mirko Domaschke was elected mayor of Nebelschütz in eastern Saxony. In the second round of voting, the 48-year-old received 332 votes, according to a statement from the municipality in the Bautzen district. Although his name did not appear on the ballot—just as it had not in the first round on September 6—he prevailed over the only officially registered candidate, Thomas Klar (independent, 304 votes). This was made possible by a special provision in municipal election law: If only one candidate runs, voters may also write a name on the ballot. Domaschke had already received the most votes this way in the first round. However, he fell just short of the more than 50 percent required in the first round. As a result, the residents of Nebelschütz were asked to return to the polls. In the second round, the candidate who receives the most votes wins.
