The old is to be the new. The Saxon AfD is likely to rely on personnel continuity when a new state chairman is elected in a few days' time.

The Saxon AfD leader Jörg Urban is standing for re-election at a state party conference in Löbau next weekend. There is no opposing candidate as yet. "Of course, any member can run for the position of state chairman at the party conference," clarified deputy party spokesperson Alexander Wiesner. However, it is difficult to predict whether anything will happen in this direction.

Urban has been a member of the Saxon state parliament for the AfD since 2014 and has led the parliamentary group since October 2017. He has also been state leader since 2018. The Saxon AfD state association was classified as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization in December 2023. The AfD has always rejected this, but has so far defended itself legally against it in vain.

Federal spokesperson Tino Chrupalla will also give a speech at the party conference. He does not have to travel far to attend. Löbau is in Chrupalla's home region of eastern Saxony.

According to Wiesner, the Saxon AfD regional association currently has 4,500 members. "We continue to have a strong growth in membership and expect to welcome our 5,000th member at the beginning of next year."

In the last state election in Saxony, the AfD received 30.6% of the vote and was only narrowly defeated by the CDU (31.9). In all federal elections since 2017, on the other hand, it has outperformed the CDU/CSU - most recently twice in a row quite clearly.
