Saxon State Parliament Holds a Ceremony and Its September Plenary Session

The Saxon State Parliament will hold a commemorative ceremony on Wednesday (10:00 a.m.) before the start of its two September plenary sessions. The morning’s program will mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Saxon Regional Association of Jewish Communities. Following opening remarks by State Parliament President Alexander Dierks, several speeches are scheduled. Renate Aris, a witness to history born in Dresden in 1935, will also address the assembly.

During the State Parliament session that follows, Jewish history and culture will once again be on the agenda that evening. The Greens are submitting a motion to make the current “Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony” a permanent initiative and to ensure that Jewish life remains visibly present in the long term. The CDU has already signaled its support. Other parliamentary groups are also unlikely to oppose the proposal.

At the start of the state parliament session, Environment Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch (CDU) will deliver a government statement on nature conservation. Three debates have been scheduled for the parliament’s “Current Affairs Hour.” At the request of the CDU, there will be a debate on securing the VW plant in Zwickau. The AfD is questioning the establishment of defense contractors in the Free State. The BSW intends to address the issue of high gas prices. The subsequent legislative deliberations will focus, among other things, on hunting laws and improved measures for culling wolves.
