In 2023, more asylum seekers were registered in Saxony than in previous years. At the same time, the number of deportations and voluntary departures also increased, as the state directorate announced on Tuesday.

A total of 23,132 asylum seekers arrived at the state's reception facilities last year. In 2022, there were 18,474. Most of the refugees came from Syria, Venezuela, Turkey and Afghanistan. In addition, 6,762 people from Ukraine were registered (previous year: 16,715).

Although the influx of refugees slowed down at the end of the year, the state directorate plans to maintain its reception capacity. Tent accommodation will be taken out of service. However, they can be set up again if demand increases.

According to the state directorate, 841 people were deported from Saxony in 2023, including 272 offenders. In the previous year, the number of deportations was 568 people. The number of voluntary departures also increased - from 435 in 2022 to 627 in 2023.
