The Left Party wants to get the fountains in the state capital bubbling again by means of an urgent motion in the Dresden City Council. The administration, on the other hand, wants to refrain from putting the majority of the facilities into operation this year for cost reasons. The Left Party argued that fountains and water features contribute significantly to the quality of life in Dresden.
"Especially in the hot summer months, they are important for a friendly and inviting atmosphere and provide a brief refreshment. Fountains and water features that are out of service, on the other hand, look bleak and present a sad picture," said the group.
Left: Wrong decision must be corrected
Faction leader André Schollbach accused Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) of spending six-figure sums per evening on his town hall parties for years. "And now there's supposed to be no money to turn on the fountains? The wrong decision to drain the fountains must be corrected immediately."
The town hall recently announced that only eight fountains would be put into operation to save money. Investments in the maintenance and safety of municipal playgrounds and the care of trees plagued by drought would take priority. There are more than 300 fountains and water features in Dresden, 99 of which are the responsibility of the municipality.
