The Left Party is banking on success in Berlin: Hope for Leipzig 2027

The Left Party in Saxony is drawing hope from its comrades’ election victory in Berlin for future successes in the Free State. Specifically, the party leadership cited next year’s mayoral election in Leipzig.

“In 2027, we want to elect Skadi Jennicke as mayor of Leipzig—the largest city in eastern Germany—for the first time. In Leipzig, too, the goal is to ensure that rent, groceries, and a good quality of life are affordable for people,” explained party co-chairs Anja Eichhorn and Marco Böhme, as well as parliamentary group leader Susanne Schaper and parliamentary secretary Luise Neuhaus-Wartenberg. 

In Berlin, Die Linke received 25.7 percent of the second votes, outpacing the CDU (18.8 percent). In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the party achieved 6.5 percent and could once again become part of the government. 

The Left: Chancellor Has Lost Touch with Reality

In the view of Saxony’s Left Party, election night also showed that Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has “clearly lost all touch with reality in Germany”—especially with regard to eastern Germany. “His attempt to sell brutal reforms as a solution is not only doomed to failure but also a major reason for the strength of the far right.”
