This year, the German Lost Art Foundation has supported museums, universities and other institutions with around 2.33 million euros to research the origins of collections from former colonies. A total of 17 projects have been funded, according to the German Lost Art Foundation in Magdeburg. For example, it is investigating how the objects came into the German collections and whether they may have been taken by force.
The Institute of Anatomy at Leipzig University, for example, which houses a skull collection dating back to the late 19th century, received support. The initial focus is on African and South American collections. Mortal remains are also to be returned.
A project at the University of Kassel is also being funded, which deals with colonial hunting and its effects. Together with cooperation partners from several African countries, the aim is to discuss the handling of hunting trophies in German collections.
