Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has encouraged the people of Saxony to be fearless and friendly towards one another in the new year. "Art and craftsmanship that touch people and bring joy come from Saxony," he said in his New Year's address, which will be broadcast on MDR television on January 1. "The Saxons have always set themselves new goals and tackled them with courage. It is precisely this attitude that is needed again now. Let's reflect on our strengths."
He encourages his fellow countrymen to change their perspective. Many visitors from Asia, for example, appreciate the local culture, landscape and traditions. Despite all the progress and achievements, there have always been setbacks in the past - such as wars, famine and epidemics. "But people never gave up, they drew hope and strength from every new beginning." Fear makes people despondent and is an enemy of the future.
