One week after the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the Interior Committee of the Saxon State Parliament is convening for a special session. The government is scheduled to brief committee members today at 10:00 a.m. on “the circumstances and consequences of last week’s hybrid attack scenario.” The role and function of the Joint Center for Countering Hybrid Threats (GAZ-Hybrid) will also be discussed.
The session is taking place at the request of the AfD parliamentary group and is closed to the public. “Drone defense in Leipzig did not work,” said AfD interior policy spokesperson Sebastian Wippel, explaining his party’s motion. The goal is to quickly remedy all shortcomings in drone defense and to clarify who bears responsibility for them, added his fellow faction member Carsten Hütter.
On the night of August 5, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was discovered near Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport and was brought down by an employee. In addition, an aircraft collided with an unknown smaller flying object—possibly a second drone. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating on suspicion of attempted detonation of explosives and endangering air traffic.
