Refugee numbers are falling nationwide. At the end of the year, Dresden takes the last containers for asylum seekers out of service. Leipzig sets up a new shared accommodation facility.

The city of Dresden is closing the last of its container-based asylum shelters at the end of the year. According to the city, the number of refugees has fallen significantly, meaning that the accommodation is no longer needed.

The state capital expects to have to accommodate around 1,300 people this year - roughly the same number as in 2024. The six container shelters that are to be closed are located in the districts of Gorbitz, Strehlen, Trachau, Seidnitz, Johannstadt and Niedersedlitz.

In the meantime, the city of Leipzig is setting up a new shared accommodation facility. An apartment building in Sellerhausen-Stünz will be rented for ten years. The city announced that 21 people could live there. At the end of March, around 500 people were still living in emergency accommodation in Leipzig - tents and an exhibition hall.
