According to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, the 81 Afghans deported from Leipzig are "serious and most serious offenders". The CSU politician said this on ARD's "Morgenmagazin". There is "a very legitimate interest of the citizens in such deportations." According to him, the repatriation came about with the help of the Gulf Emirate of Qatar and via "technical contacts" with Afghanistan. The flight is therefore going directly to Afghanistan.
Dobrindt reiterated that he believes talks with the Taliban are necessary: "If you also think about the fact that we want to continue to enable deportations to Afghanistan in the future, then you also have to have these contacts, you have to have these talks. That is below diplomatic relations, but these talks will have to be held," he said.
Germany does not maintain diplomatic relations with the Islamist Taliban in Kabul. The group is internationally isolated, particularly because of its disregard for human rights and women's rights in particular. The regime is not recognized as a legitimate government, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) recently said.
