After several fractures in the remaining structure of Dresden's Carola Bridge, the city has decided not to put it out to tender for demolition. "There is imminent danger," said Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert (CDU). "We will award the contract directly in order to quickly eliminate the dangers posed by the structure." He explained the decision by saying that "wire by wire, you can hear how the remaining safety of the bridge is dwindling".
The direct award of the contract will take place this week, according to the town hall. Drone overflights are planned for next Monday and Tuesday to support the explosive ordnance detection in the Elbe in preparation for the demolition work. "This is still necessary for safe demolition."
A decision is to be made on Sunday as to whether ships can sail again from next Monday. "If no further incidents occur for 72 hours, a ship-by-ship passage for urgent transports will be possible again after notification and under constant monitoring."
