The demolition work on Dresden's Carola Bridge, parts of which have collapsed, is slightly behind schedule. "Demolition work was carried out on the Carola Bridge between the holidays," the administration announced. They have been continuing since Thursday, but could not be fully completed by Friday. Originally, the site on the Old Town side was supposed to be cleared by then. The city intends to provide information on further progress at the beginning of next week.
Bridge collapsed in September
A section of the structure, which was inaugurated in 1971 and includes streetcar tracks and a cycle path, collapsed unexpectedly on the night of September 11. No people were injured. The main cause is thought to be stress corrosion cracking caused by moisture. In conjunction with material fatigue due to stress, preliminary findings indicate that this led to numerous tendons of the bridge failing and losing their tensioning force.
The bridge now has to be completely demolished. This also affects the two bridge sections, which have been renovated in recent years at a cost of several million euros. The city is planning to build a replacement.
