What's next for VW in Zwickau? The state premier's proposals on the matter are sparking controversy. The Left Party is now putting the idea to the test in the state legislature.

On Thursday (starting at 10:00 a.m.), the state parliament plans to debate two long-standing issues in Saxon politics—the future of VW in Zwickau and wind power. The topic of renewable energy was added to the agenda at the urging of the Greens, while the Volkswagen issue was added at the request of the Left Party. The Left Party intends to scrutinize the proposals put forward by Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU).

Kretschmer’s Proposals on VW Under Scrutiny

The head of government recently proposed the establishment of an AutoUnion GmbH to save the VW plant in Zwickau, which is threatened with closure. To this end, he also brought up a new work schedule model and lower pay. That is why the Left Party has adopted the slogan “Pay cuts are not the solution—save the Saxon VW plants with the workers, not against them, Mr. Kretschmer!”

At the start of the plenary session, the state parliament will first elect the 33 men and women who will represent Saxony in the election of a new head of state. A federal president is to be elected in late January during a Federal Assembly in Berlin.

Head of the State Chancellery to be questioned on international partnerships

During the regular questioning of the state government, Head of the State Chancellery Andreas Handschuh (independent) is to answer questions from the state parliament members. The discussion will then focus on Saxony’s international cooperation with other regions in Europe and around the world. The AfD wants to debate media censorship and surveillance and, in a separate debate, is calling for tougher measures against violent children.

The BSW has requested a debate on multidisciplinary teams in schools. The Greens are submitting a motion aimed at ensuring access to obstetric care even in rural areas. And The Left is calling for the introduction of an affordable, statewide mobility pass.
