At an AfD event, Uwe Steimle made derogatory remarks about Chancellor Friedrich Merz and former Chancellor Angela Merkel. The district attorney’s office is still investigating.

An investigation into cabaret artist Uwe Steimle is still ongoing following his performance at an AfD event. A spokeswoman for the Dessau-Roßlau public prosecutor’s office confirmed this in response to an inquiry from the German Press Agency. “No further information is being provided at this time,” the spokeswoman added.

During the event in Dessau-Roßlau in mid-July, the comedian made derogatory remarks about Chancellor Friedrich Merz and former Chancellor Angela Merkel (both CDU). Because of his statements, the public prosecutor’s office launched an investigation under Section 126 of the Criminal Code. The charge relates to disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit criminal offenses.

Steimle himself had rejected the allegations after the investigation became public. He told the internet radio station “Kontrafunk” that he was trying to shake things up through satire. He described himself as “an old leftist” and said he would not allow himself to be turned into a “new right-winger.”
