Leipzig/Halle Airport will also be the scene of a nationwide day of protest against deportations this Saturday (October 24). According to the organizers, the protest here focuses primarily on the controversial charter flights deporting people to Afghanistan. “It is and remains scandalous that these deportations are carried out in cooperation with the Taliban and that an airline can profit from this appalling practice. They are making money off of ruined lives,” explained alliance spokesperson Luca Müller. The day of action, under the slogan “Nationwide Against Deportation Mania,” is directed against the deportation of rejected asylum seekers, pre-deportation detention, and the expansion of infrastructure for this purpose. In addition to Leipzig, protests are planned at the airports in Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hanover, and Berlin. According to the activists, the aim is to criticize the federal government’s political priorities. While serious budget cuts are being discussed—particularly in the social and health sectors—substantial public funds are simultaneously being allocated to deportations and the necessary infrastructure, they said.
