The Saxon AfD is about to hold an election for its executive board. The question will be how much of the old can be found in the new. Party leader Jörg Urban urges his party to remain united.

The Saxon AfD plans to elect a new state executive at a party conference in Löbau on Saturday (from 10.00 am). Party leader Jörg Urban wants to continue leading his party and called for unity in advance. "We assume that we will face even more headwinds in the future than before," he said recently in Dresden. In view of the AfD's successes, political opponents will certainly bring out the big guns. "As a party, we have to react to this with unity."

Greeting from the federal speaker

Urban (61) has been a member of the AfD state parliament in Dresden since 2014 and has led the parliamentary group since October 2017. He has also been state leader since 2018.

The Saxon AfD state association was classified as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization in December 2023. The AfD has always rejected this, but has so far defended itself legally against it in vain. AfD national spokesperson Tino Chrupalla will also give a speech at the party conference.

AfD aims to break the 5,000-member mark in Saxony in 2027

The Saxon AfD says it currently has around 4,500 members and wants to break the 5,000-member mark early next year. In the last state election in Saxony, it received 30.6% of the vote and was only narrowly defeated by the CDU (31.9). In all federal elections since 2017, however, it has outperformed the CDU/CSU - most recently twice in a row by quite a wide margin.
