578 Petitions to the State Legislature—Hope Usually Unfulfilled

Last year, citizens in Saxony pinned their hopes on the state parliament regarding a wide range of issues: They submitted a total of 578 petitions. In 2024, the number had been 667. This is according to the report from the Petitions Committee. The numbers for both years were higher than the previous year’s figures. In 2023 and 2022, 434 and 460 petitions, respectively, reached the parliament.

A Wide Range of Topics in the Petitions

“The issues that citizens bring to our attention are as diverse as life itself. They concern issues of social security, education and care, internal security, infrastructure, as well as environmental and administrative matters. This breadth shows that politics touches many areas of daily life,” explained CDU politician Daniela Kuge, chair of the Petitions Committee.

Transportation Dominates

In 2025, most petitions—a total of 65—were submitted regarding state transportation planning, public transit, and air travel, according to reports. Similar to the previous year, 37 petitions dealt with education and child-rearing.

The petition “Truck Ban on the B174/Südring Chemnitz” had the most supporters, with 3,329 signatures. The petition “Preserve the ASB Daycare Center Schlumpfhausen in Oschatz” garnered 2,195 signatures.

The volume of petitions varies by region. Looking at the major cities, most petitions last year came from Leipzig (257), followed by Dresden (39) and Chemnitz (13). Among the districts, Vogtlandkreis (27), Görlitz (23), and Bautzen (22) led the way. 

The vast majority of petitions are unsuccessful

In the vast majority of cases, however, the hopes associated with a petition are not fulfilled. Last year, 822 petitions were closed. Only in 29 cases was the issue resolved or partially resolved. 

Article 35 of the Saxon Constitution grants everyone the right to submit requests and complaints: “Every person has the right, individually or jointly with others, to address the competent authorities and the representative body in writing with requests or complaints.” With 24 members, the Petitions Committee is the largest committee of the Saxon State Parliament.
