After more than 30 years in politics, Sabine Zimmermann is retiring due to illness. Her seat in the state parliament will be taken over by a communication scientist from Leipzig.

Sabine Zimmermann (BSW) is leaving the state parliament in Saxony, thus completing her retirement from politics. The former BSW parliamentary group chairwoman is resigning her seat in the state parliament today, as the parliamentary group announced. "For me, politics means taking a stand, taking responsibility and standing up for those who are too often ignored," said Zimmermann, according to the press release. "I have worked, argued and fought for this."

Retirement due to illness

Zimmermann had already announced her retirement last September. She also stepped down as state party chairwoman. The reason for her departure after more than three decades in active politics is an illness.

After reunification, Zimmermann was initially a trade unionist and SPD member. She later sat in the Bundestag for the Left Party and headed the Committee on Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth for a while. In 2023, she left the Left Party and joined the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).
