The Greens in the Saxon state parliament accuse the state government of failing to build social housing. According to Thomas Löser, spokesperson for housing and construction for the Green parliamentary group, a total of 200 million euros in federal funding earmarked for social housing has gone unused in the state over the past five years. This is clear from the Ministry of Infrastructure's answer to his minor interpellation. Around 95 million euros of this unclaimed money even had to be returned to the federal government.
"Hundreds of social housing units were simply not built - even though the money was there. This is really bitter news for the people of Dresden and Leipzig in particular," emphasized Löser. The state government was far too slow to adjust the subsidy rates. "However, if the subsidy rates regularly lag behind the development of construction prices, the money will not be called up by the developers."
The Ministry of Infrastructure did not initially respond to a request for comment.
