Organizations See Cultural Infrastructure in Saxony at Risk

Due to the state’s financial situation, cultural associations in Saxony see one of the Free State’s long-standing hallmarks in jeopardy: its cultural scene. “A rollback of the cultural infrastructure is a misguided economic and social policy,” stated the Interest Group of State Cultural Associations in response to the government’s draft of the 2027–2028 biennial budget. The group represents the interests of numerous associations for theater, the visual arts, the cultural and creative industries, museums, libraries, sociocultural activities, children’s and youth education, film, literature, and music.

Associations Demand Significant Revisions

The coalition called for significant revisions during the ongoing parliamentary proceedings. It argued that the government is setting the wrong priorities with the planned cuts to the cultural sector. “While the Free State’s overall budget is set to grow by six percent in 2027 and by another two percent in 2028, significant cuts to cultural funding are planned at the same time,” the statement said. The situation in rural areas is a particular cause for concern

The associations’ concern is focused primarily on the situation in rural areas. There, cultural networks have emerged in recent years thanks to great dedication, the interest group reported. They are “important anchors for social cohesion and strengthen Saxony’s regional appeal.” “A dismantling of these structures will negatively impact the Free State’s cultural landscape.”

Call for Support for the Independent Arts Scene

With regard to the cultural scene, the associations are calling for a course correction on four points. The Cultural Space Act must be continued as a central pillar of funding at the level of 108.7 million euros, as in this year. The cuts to the Cultural Foundation contained in the government’s draft bill must be reversed. The third point concerns the need to avoid cuts to cultural education—such as at youth art schools. In addition, funding for the independent arts scene and institutional support must be secured.
