The number of Ukrainians seeking protection in Saxony rose significantly in September. What is behind the figures and what role new regulations in Ukraine play.

According to a report, more people seeking protection from Ukraine are arriving in Saxony again. In September, 1,253 Ukrainians arrived in the Free State of Saxony - the highest number since August 2022, reports the "Freie Presse", referring to figures from the Saxony State Directorate. "Within just two weeks, the daily number of arrivals at the reception centers in the Free State of Saxony has doubled and now quadrupled," a spokesperson for the state directorate told the newspaper.

The main reason for the increase in numbers is the relaxation of exit regulations for Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22. According to the report, around 2,700 people from Ukraine have arrived in Saxony's initial reception facilities since the beginning of the year. The actual number of new arrivals from Ukraine could be higher because some people seeking protection register directly with the districts and independent cities and are therefore not recorded in these statistics.
