Saxony has selected its representatives for the Federal Assembly. At the end of January, they will help decide who will succeed Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The delegates include some prominent figures.

The Saxon State Parliament has elected the Free State’s representatives to the Federal Assembly. The list of delegates includes some prominent names: Among others, the CDU is sending Holocaust survivor Renate Aris and former Federal Minister Thomas de Maizière to Berlin. The BSW’s list includes journalist and former “Tagesschau” anchor Constantin Schreiber. Among the Green Party’s nominees is Leipzig-based author Martina Hefter.

Kretschmer campaigns for Aigner

The Federal Assembly will convene on January 30 to decide on the successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It is composed of the 630 members of the Bundestag and an equal number of representatives from the federal states. Saxony sends 33 members to the body.

In the debate over candidates for the federal presidential election, Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has already spoken out clearly in favor of Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU). He hopes she will become the Union’s joint candidate. CDU leader Friedrich Merz had previously announced that a woman should assume the highest office in the country. A final decision on the candidacy has yet to be made.
