State Legislature Debates Daycare Quality and Elbe River Expansion

The Saxon State Parliament plans to debate the quality of care in daycare centers on Thursday (starting at 10:00 a.m.). The backdrop to this is the federal government’s so-called “Early Childhood Education and Care Start Opportunities and Quality Development Act.” The goal is to bring about a shift in education policy through language tests for all four-year-olds and targeted support in daycare centers. In Saxony, the law has faced criticism because, while the federal government is imposing more requirements, it is cutting funding for the states in this area.

The parliamentary debate will also address the controversial expansion of the Elbe River and the difficult financial situation facing long-term care insurance funds. During the subsequent question-and-answer session with the state government, Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) will answer questions from the state legislators. A joint motion by the CDU, SPD, Greens, and The Left focuses on civil protection in the Free State. At the request of the AfD, the afternoon session will address a moratorium on the expansion of wind turbines. The CDU and SPD are turning their attention to the situation of community gardens.
