The AfD politician André Barth has won the mayoral election in Altenberg in the Eastern Ore Mountains. According to the preliminary results, he received 61.8 percent of the vote, as the town council announced online. This means that he achieved the required majority of more than 50 percent in the first round of voting. Barth had previously been acting mayor. Voter turnout on Sunday was 70.8 percent.
The mayoral election in the winter sports resort with a population of around 7,500 was necessary after the head of the town, Markus Wiesenberg (CDU), threw in the towel in summer 2025. He resigned from office and blamed a deadlock in the town council. His deputy Barth then took over the reins.
