Despite generous donations of goods, the food banks in Saxony are experiencing rising expenditure. The association is still dependent on support.

The food banks in Saxony received around 1,162 tons of large donations via the state logistics department this year. Large industrial partners are increasingly supporting the state association with large donations of goods, which are then passed on to the local food banks, explained state chairman Stephan Trutschler.

Despite this, there have been considerable burdens in the current year, it said. The loss of a warehouse space in Dresden's Ostragehege that had been used for many years and the move to the new logistics center had resulted in costs of around 250,000 euros. At the same time, energy, rental and transportation costs have risen considerably. Even large individual donations could not permanently offset structural deficits. The regional association is more reliant than ever on donations.

The annual balance sheet shows that around 900,000 collections were registered at the distribution points across the country. According to the figures, more than 1,000 volunteers are involved in rescuing food and feeding people in need.
