Village gathering places are intended to strengthen community cohesion in Saxony's villages

Village community centers are intended to make rural life in Saxony more attractive. The State Office for the Environment, Agriculture, and Geology commissioned a study on this topic, and the results are now available, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.

The qualitative study examines how village community centers are established, operated, and used, and how owners, operators, and users cooperate. To this end, eight case studies were conducted in villages, including Kletzen in the municipality of Krostitz, Brößnitz in the municipality of Lampertswalde, and Wittgendorf, which is part of the city of Zittau.

Local Engagement Is Essential

“The study shows just how much potential lies within our villages when committed citizens join forces with the local government, clubs, church congregations, fire departments, and many other stakeholders. After all, a village community center isn’t brought to life by walls, tables, and chairs, but solely by the people who take on responsibility,” explained Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU). Several programs are in place to support this sense of personal responsibility. In this way, gathering places become spaces that strengthen a sense of home, cohesion, and trust in one’s own ability to shape the community.

Space for Club Activities and Celebrations

The buildings housing such village community centers often belong to the municipality. They are often housed in former schools and inns. However, operations and events are frequently managed by clubs, local leaders, or dedicated individuals. The centers provide space for club activities, local council meetings, festivals, private celebrations, youth programs, or senior citizen gatherings. They cannot simply replace services that are being phased out—such as village stores, restaurants, bank branches, or schools—but they do help facilitate local interaction and strengthen social ties.

Operation Requires Clear Responsibilities

“The study makes it clear that operating such facilities is challenging. Frequently cited issues include rising operating and energy costs, structural requirements, the challenge of recruiting younger volunteers, and limited volunteer resources,” according to one finding. It is therefore crucial to plan usage realistically, distribute responsibility among several people, and tailor services to the actual needs of the community.
