The population of Saxony will continue to fall in the coming years. Depending on the calculation, the figure will fall by 8.2 percent to 15.2 percent, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. In 2024, around 4.04 million people still lived in the state. In 2045, it is expected to be 3.71 million and 3.43 million respectively. The statisticians had calculated a total of three variants. The projection is based on the analysis of population development in the years 2021 to 2024.
According to this, all ten districts and the city of Chemnitz will lose inhabitants by 2045 in all calculation variants. Leipzig can expect an increase of 5.8 percent and 1.7 percent respectively in two of the three variants. Dresden would see an increase of 1.6 percent in at least one variant. The Vogtlandkreis and Erzgebirgskreis districts would suffer the greatest loss - almost a quarter of the population - in the maximum variant. Five other districts would also lose more than one in ten citizens in the minimum variant.
