The Meerane Cemetery Support Association has received a prestigious award in the field of historic preservation. The “Silver Hemisphere” honors outstanding commitment by individuals or groups to historic preservation and archaeology, according to the German National Committee for Historic Preservation. The association has worked to preserve the historic Meerane Cemetery—beyond its function as a burial ground—as a place of remembrance for past generations, architectural heritage, and city history, and thus as part of the cultural heritage of the general public, while bringing it to life for future generations.
The “Silver Hemisphere” is an honorary award
The “Silver Hemisphere” is an honorary award that does not come with any prize money. It consists of several discs arranged at a slight distance from one another and held together by a clasp. The hemisphere is intended to embody, in a modern and aesthetically appealing form, the idea of preserving what has fallen apart or been damaged in its original state.
The German Prize for Monument Preservation is awarded in four categories—this year marking its 49th edition. It is the highest honor in this field in Germany. This year, the jury had to choose from 64 submissions. Ten of them were selected as winners. The award ceremony will take place on October 26 in Schwerin.
