The Max Pechstein Museum in Zwickau has sent its treasures on tour - the next stop is Linz. The exhibition there also refers to a special connection between the two cities.

High-caliber works of art from the Zwickau Max Pechstein Museum will soon be on display in Linz, Austria. The exhibition is part of an international tour of more than 100 works by the expressionist Max Pechstein (1881-1955) during the multi-year renovation of the Zwickau museum building. The show in Linz also aims to highlight a historical connection between the two cities, it is said.

"The exhibition makes visible how closely the history of modernism is linked to networks of artists, collectors and art dealers - and how these still shape our institutions today," explained the director of the Lentos Kunstmuseum, Hemma Schmutz, in a statement.

The collection history of both museums has close links to the Gurlitt family. From 1925 to 1930, Hildebrand Gurlitt was director of the then König-Albert-Museum in Zwickau - the predecessor of today's art collections. According to the city of Zwickau, he pushed for the establishment of an important collection of modern art and purchased works by Max Pechstein early on. Meanwhile, his cousin Wolfgang Gurlitt laid the foundations for the Neue Galerie collection in Linz, from which the Lentos Art Museum emerged. "Both Gurlitts were also involved in the complex interdependencies of the art trade under National Socialism, which still need to be critically examined today."

The exhibition "Max Pechstein. Adventure Expressionism" can be seen in Linz from April 23 to August 30.
