Just in time for the cold season, the new roof with better snow protection is inaugurated at Dresden Central Station. The timing is good: one of the city's most famous Christmas markets is opening soon.

About a week before the opening of the Striezelmarkt, the new hall roof at Dresden's main railway station was officially inaugurated. "I am very pleased that the extensive renovation work - in which the Free State of Saxony also contributed financially - has succeeded in preserving and structurally improving the unique hall roof," said Saxony's Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU), according to a statement from Deutsche Bahn.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the construction work on the historic station concourse was completed on schedule last year after around three years. This year, the final steps are still being taken. The costs of around 50 million euros are being borne by the federal government, Saxony and Deutsche Bahn.

Better protection against snow and ice

The hall roof was badly damaged in the winter of 2010/11 - a good four years after completion. The old roof cladding, which covered an area of around 33,000 square meters, has now been removed and replaced with a new membrane. So-called skylights were installed in the process. Snow drifts and broken ice can be deposited on them without clogging the funnels underneath for the drainage of melt and rainwater.
