The Great Garden in Dresden has a new sculpture depot. The new building serves to protect and store the park's valuable collection, which includes original marble sculptures by the Italian sculptors Antonio Corradini and Pietro Balestra from the 17th and 18th centuries, according to the Saxon State Real Estate and Construction Management. Works that can no longer be displayed due to their age and condition are to be housed there.
The depot is around 32 meters long and 11 meters wide. There is space for 130 sculptures, plaster casts and numerous fragments on 280 square meters. Visitors can view the works on display inside through a large window wall on the north side. Further objects are located on a heavy-duty shelf on the rear wall.
In the future, there are plans to open the depot to the public in the form of guided tours on certain occasions or at the request of the operator, Schlösserland Sachsen. The construction costs amounted to 2.2 million euros. The funds came from the Saxon budget.
