Resounding proof of a solid musical education: The Sächsische Landesgymnasium für Musik in Dresden played another serenade for its 60th birthday and received much applause.

The Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik (SLGM) in Dresden really struck a chord with the audience with its 60th anniversary concert. The students were celebrated extensively on Monday evening for their more than two-hour performance at the Kulturpalast in the city on the Elbe. The concert was held under the motto "Weber meets Jazz" and was dedicated to another jubilarian. The grammar school is named after Carl Maria von Weber, the 200th anniversary of whose death is being commemorated this year.

The main aim of the concert was to "highlight the diversity and excellence of musical education at the SLGM - future-oriented, individually focused, practical and formative for personal development", explained Ekaterina Sapega-Klein, Artistic Director of the Landesgymnasium, in advance. The young musicians under the direction of conductor Eckehard Stier were able to demonstrate this at every stage of the concert.

Symphony orchestra and big band united

In addition to the symphony orchestra, the school's big band also performed. Compositions by Hans Ek, Theresia Philipp and Jacob Collier rounded off the program. One of the highlights was a series of Beatles songs arranged and set to new music by Dresden musician Michael Fuchs.

The Landesgymnasium is a remnant from the GDR, where young talents were nurtured in special schools for music. Apart from Dresden, the only other schools of this kind are in Weimar and the Bach-Gymnasium in Berlin. The institution in Dresden accepts a maximum of 150 pupils. They have to pass an aptitude test. There are currently 138 young people studying here - 70 boys and 68 girls.
